Ewen Chardronnet has been researching for a couple of years on the early years of the U.S. space program, namely the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, founded in 1943. Chardronnet has encountered the son of Frank Malina, the first director of this laboratory. At the time he was together with Frank Oppenheimer, the brother of Robert Oppenheimer, in a communist student group. In 1944 these scientist, mostly communist and socialist, did the first atomic bomb tests. In October 1945 he has launched the White Corporal, the first missile to reach space. These leftist scientists have designed the atomic bomb to counter fascism, and refused to have it trigger a cold war. In may 1945 they elaborate with Werner Von Braun and some 100 other Germans that are brought in after the war, on an updated version of the V2-rocket. Malina cum suis refuse to work with them and goes to UNESCO in France. When McCarthy becomes president, after the first Russian atomic bomb and the seizing of power by Mao in China, they are chased by FBI first and later by McCarthyism.
